What’s Happening in Traffic

Traffic pattern changes

Several new roads have recently opened and construction is ongoing south of the Trans-Canada Highway. Please slow down and stay alert for signage. Lane closures and reduced speeds will continue and driving behaviours may be unexpected as people adjust to the new infrastructure.

Stoney Trail reduced to one lane at the Trans-Canada Highway

Bow River bridge rehabilitation continues and only one lane is open on Stoney Trail north and south of the Trans-Canada Highway. The detour is being carefully monitored and optimized, however, there are limited options to carry traffic over the river while the bridge is in rehabilitation.

Please expect delays and consider using alternate routes.

Highway 8 reduced to a single lane of alternating traffic

The new westbound Highway 8 flyover is expected to open to traffic this week. To pave the tie in from the flyover to the existing lanes, Highway 8 will be reduced to a single lane of alternating traffic for two nights. The lane closures will be shared on electronic information boards once the timing is confirmed.

All work is weather dependent. Please check 511 Alberta and The City of Calgary’s traffic information map for up-to-date information on traffic detours and speed reductions. For all other project information, please visit westringroad.ca

We appreciate your patience during construction.

Westbound Highway 8 Traffic Shift Expected This Week

This week, westbound Highway 8 traffic is expected to be shifted to the new alignment over the flyover. Please be patient with other drivers while everyone adjusts to the new traffic pattern. The Highway 8 interchange is complex and may not be intuitive for drivers unfamiliar with the area. Traffic flows will continue to improve as construction proceeds and new infrastructure becomes available.

Progress on the Slip Ramp to 17 Avenue S.W.

The first lift of asphalt is down on the “slip ramp” from northbound Stoney Trail to 17 Avenue S.W. “Slip road” is a term used in the United Kingdom for a short road used to get on or off a major road or highway. Similarly, a “slip lane” or “filter lane” describes a lane connecting two roads without entering an intersection.
