What’s Happening in Traffic This Week

Traffic Shift on Old Banff Coach Road S.W.

This week, westbound traffic on Old Banff Coach Road S.W. will be shifted onto the eastbound lanes, and the westbound lanes will be closed west of Cougar Ridge Drive S.W. to accommodate storm line construction on the north side of the road.

There will be open excavation on the north side of the road. Pedestrians are reminded to cross Old Banff Coach Road S.W. at 85 Street S.W. or another designated crossing. Do not enter the construction zone.

REMINDER: Highway 8 Traffic Shift

The traffic shift on Highway 8 is currently planned for tomorrow (Tuesday, April 26, 2022), weather permitting.

Westbound Highway 8 traffic will be shifted to the eastbound lanes using a paved median crossover (crossovers are used to detour traffic from one carriageway to another).

UPCOMING: Eastbound Trans-Canada Highway Traffic Shift

Detour planning is underway to shift the eastbound Trans-Canada Highway lanes, between Old Banff Coach Road S.W. and Valley Ridge Boulevard N.W., north to the new pavement completed last year. This will be an interim detour to allow construction of the new eastbound carriageway to proceed.

The traffic shift will require two or three stages over approximately one week. Please watch for signage in the coming weeks and drive cautiously as traffic adjusts to the new configuration.

South of the Trans-Canada Highway

Work on the long stretch of mainline Stoney Trail, south of the Trans-Canada Highway, is ongoing.

Bow Trail S.W.

Stormwater pipe has been installed under the future northbound Stoney Trail lanes on the east side of the Bow Trail bridge.

Rock is typically used as backfill around a concrete pipe because it promotes drainage and doesn’t need to provide as much structural support, whereas a more flexible pipe would require a compact soil structure
The vertical concrete pipe is a manhole that will provide access to the stormwater pipe from ground level

Above ground, work on the bridge deck is ongoing.

Northbound Stoney Trail to Westbound Highway 8 Flyover

A mud slab is poured around the piles for the west pier; a mud slab provides a clean, level workspace for pier construction
