What’s Happening in Traffic This Week

Slopeview Drive S.W. Access

This week traffic will be shifted to the permanent access to Slopeview Drive S.W. off of the roundabout. The temporary access will close.

Daily Lane Closures on Trans-Canada Highway at Stoney Trail – Delays Expected

Between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day until Thursday, November 3, 2022, there will be lane closures on eastbound and westbound Trans-Canada Highway to install bridge lighting. Delays are expected.

Highway 8 Traffic Shifted to Long-term Detour

Last week Highway 8 traffic was shifted to the new eastbound lanes. This is a significant milestone for the South project, opening much of the area needed to construct the interchange. This detour will be operational for the remainder of construction and will reduce the need for future traffic disruptions.

All work is weather dependant. Please check 511 Alberta and The City of Calgary’s traffic information map for up-to-date information on traffic detours and speed reductions. For all other project information, please visit westringroad.ca

We appreciate your patience during construction.

Emergency Spillways

Stormwater management systems capture runoff from impermeable or hardscape surfaces (like concrete) and funnel it into a network of drainage ditches, swales, culverts, pipes and ponds. The drainage network is designed to manage specific “storm events”, which are based on calculated amounts of precipitation for a given area. In other words, the drainage system is designed to handle normal and unusual amounts of runoff.

In rare circumstances when the runoff is unusually high and comes quickly, such as very heavy rainfall during spring when the drainage system is already handling increased runoff from snow melt, the runoff may exceed the capacity of a stormpond. The emergency spillway channels the overflow into the drainage system or directly into the watercourse (rivers and streams) to prevent flooding.

Looking north at the stormpond just north of Old Banff Coach Road S.W.; if the stormwater pond were to overflow, the emergency spillway would channel the water into the drainage ditch on the west side of Stoney Trail

Overhead Sign Installations

Despite the recent snow, overhead sign installations continued last week. More overnight lane closures are expected this week to install the remaining overhead signs.
