Project Update: February 28, 2022

What’s Happening in Traffic This Week

UPCOMING: Intermittent Traffic Delays on Westbound Highway 8

Starting Monday, March 7 and continuing for approximately one week, 14 girders for the Highway 8 / Stoney Trail interchange bridges will be delivered to the construction site via westbound Highway 8. There will be intermittent delays on Highway 8 as the trucks turn north (right) onto the site.

Deliveries will occur during daylight hours and three girders are anticipated to arrive per day.

The construction crossing is also operational. Please expect delays in this area.

All work is weather dependant. Please check 511 Alberta and The City of Calgary’s traffic information map  for up-to-date information on traffic detours and speed reductions.

We appreciate your patience during construction.

The drone was out at the end of 2021 to capture progress on the project. Despite the snow cover, the photos illustrate the considerable infrastructure constructed so far.

Old Banff Coach Road S.W.

Wingwalls are perpendicular to the ends of a bridge abutment and act as a retaining wall for the backfill for the approach. The approach is the transition area between the road and the bridge.

Wingwalls can be oriented at a right angle to the abutment (straight wingwall) or angled outward from the abutment (splayed wingwall). The Old Banff Coach Road S.W. bridge has straight wingwalls.

The wooden forms to shape the wingwalls are being installed on the Old Banff Coach Road S.W. bridge abutments.

Highway 8

Piling is underway for the westbound Highway 8 flyover bridge piers, and girders will soon be placed on the abutments for the northbound and southbound Stoney Trail bridges.
