Project Update – August 9, 2021

What’s Happening in Traffic This Week

Overnight Road Maintenance South of Valley Ridge August 10

From 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10, to 12 a.m. Wednesday, August 11, various lane closures will be required for asphalt repairs on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Stoney Trail and on the ramp from southbound Stoney Trail to westbound Trans-Canada Highway. One lane will remain open in the areas where work is being completed.

The lane closures required for the work would result in significant traffic disruptions during the day but minimal impact to traffic or disturbance to residents is expected overnight due to the short duration and sequence of work (moving primarily from east to west). Back-up beepers will be used when necessary to ensure the safety of our crew members.

Scenic Acres Link N.W. Lane Closures

This month there are a series of lane closures on Scenic Acres Link N.W. for bridge work. Beginning tomorrow night, August 10, the road will be fully closed each night (6:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.) until August 17.

Please use Nose Hill Drive N.W. via Crowchild Trail or Stoney Trail.

Girder Deliveries at Old Banff Coach Road S.W.

The first girders for the South project will be arriving at the Old Banff Coach Road S.W. interchange site starting tonight. Short traffic stoppages lasting about five minutes will be required for the trucks to turn into the work site. Girder deliveries are planned each weeknight for approximately nine nights, until August 19. Please watch for flag people directing traffic.

Crestmont Boulevard S.W. Single Lane Alternating Traffic

Beginning Friday, August 13, and lasting approximately one month, Crestmont Boulevard S.W. will operate as a single lane with alternating traffic using temporary traffic signals. The lane closure is required to tie in the re-aligned Crestmont Boulevard S.W. with the existing road.

All work is weather dependent. Please check 511 Alberta and The City of Calgary’s traffic information map  for up-to-date information on traffic detours and speed reductions. For all other project information, please visit westringroad.ca

We appreciate your patience during construction.

Trans-Canada Highway Bridges

When you’ve constructed this many bridges in a row, the process becomes pretty efficient. Bridge deck formwork installation for these bridges over the Trans-Canada Highway is underway.

Monitoring Settlement in the Springbank Ravine

With the wetland removed, ground improvements complete and a drainage culvert installed, earthworks to grade the area for construction will start. Earth materials generally compress when load is applied, so in areas where settlement is expected or an embankment is being constructed – which will apply loading forces to the earth below – a settlement plate is being installed.

Settlement plates monitor and measure how much the earth materials are settling or compressing as more material is added. A wood or metal base plate is installed and then a reference rod (also called a riser pipe) is attached. The elevations of the settlement plate and reference rod are recorded so they can be compared to elevations after fill is added and compacted. Additional reference rods can be attached as needed.

Highway 8 Interchange

Earthworks have begun and a test pile has been driven as part of the early works for this systems interchange that will connect Highway 8 / Southwest Calgary Ring Road with West Calgary Ring Road.
