The Transportation / Utility Corridor (TUC) is land set aside to house the ring road, major power lines, pipelines and linear municipal utilities. In preparation for the start of construction on the south segment this spring, some trees and brush are being cleared from within the footprint of the TUC.
Alberta Transportation carefully considers the environmental impacts related to tree removal for any provincial project, including the West Calgary Ring Road. Trees and brush will only be removed in the areas required to construct the new infrastructure to support the successful completion of the project. These areas have been identified based on the current plans as well as the design submissions from the short-listed proponents to minimize tree removals.
If the contractor advises that additional trees need to be removed during construction, Alberta Transportation will review the request in accordance with provincial regulations and relevant legislation, modify as needed and notify impacted stakeholders when appropriate. This is a standard best practice when managing government infrastructure projects.
