Project Update – December 6, 2021

What’s Happening in Traffic This Week

Single Lane of Alternating Traffic on Old Banff Coach Road S.W.

For approximately one week starting Wednesday, December 8, 2021, Old Banff Coach Road S.W. will operate as a single lane of alternating traffic east of 101 Street S.W. between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day for utility installations. Please drive cautiously and watch for flag persons directing traffic.

Winter Driving in Construction Zones

As we all get used to winter driving conditions once again, remember that it can take up to 12 times longer for a vehicle to come to stop in snowy or icy conditions than on a dry road.

The construction crossings on Old Banff Coach Road S.W., 101 Street S.W. and 17 Avenue S.W. will continue to be used through the winter. Watch for flag persons directing traffic, obey the traffic signals and leave yourself extra room for stopping. Drivers are legally required to drive to conditions, which may mean driving slower than the posted speed limit.

All work is weather dependent. Please check 511 Alberta and The City of Calgary’s traffic information map  for up-to-date information on traffic detours and speed reductions. For all other project information, please visit

We appreciate your patience during construction.

Secant Pile Retaining Wall

The retaining wall between Canada Olympic Drive S.W. and the ramp from eastbound Trans-Canada Highway to Bowfort Road N.W. is called a secant pile wall. In mathematics, a secant is a straight line intersecting a curve at two or more points. Roughly translated for this application, the secant retaining wall is constructed with overlapping concrete piles.

Piles for the secant wall alternate between reinforced and non-reinforced piles.

Once the concrete cured, the area north of Canada Olympic Drive S.W. was excavated for the ramp from eastbound Trans-Canada Highway to Bowfort Road N.W.
