In preparation for the start of construction on the south segment of the West Calgary Ring Road (WCRR) this spring, some trees and brush are being cleared from within the footprint of the Transportation / Utility Corridor. This work will begin in early February 2020 between Old Banff Coach Road SW and Lower Springbank Road. Crews will work Monday to Saturday between the hours of 7:30 am and 6:00 pm.
Alberta Transportation carefully considers the environmental impacts related to tree removal for any provincial project, including the WCRR. Only trees and brush in the areas required to construct the new infrastructure will be removed to support the successful completion of the project. These areas have been identified based on the current plans as well as the design submissions from the short-listed proponents to minimize tree removals.
This work will happen outside of the nesting window for migratory birds and other nesting species in accordance with the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994. In Calgary, the nesting window extends from mid-April to late August each year. As such, all tree clearing will be complete by the end of March 2020, while mulching and clean up are expected to be complete at the end of April 2020.
Trees will not be replanted adjacent to the WCRR due to ongoing maintenance requirements and potential future utilities. Areas disturbed by construction will be seeded with native grass mixtures when the project is complete.
Additional tree removal
If the contractor advises that additional trees need to be removed during construction, Alberta Transportation will review the request in accordance within provincial regulations and relevant legislation, modify as needed and notify impacted stakeholders when appropriate. This is a standard best practice when managing government infrastructure projects.
Public Information Session
Alberta Transportation is holding a public information session to answer questions and address concerns about the tree clearing. Members of the project team will be available to discuss the need to remove the trees and how the environment is being protected. The event is drop in and no formal presentation will be given.

In 2022, the completed ring road will provide 100 km of free flow traffic around Calgary, improving access to schools, recreation and employment and reducing congestion within the city which is beneficial for goods movement and overall quality of life.
Thank you for your patience during construction.
