Tree clearing for new stormwater pond west of Valley Ridge

On December 3, 2019, the contractor began hand-clearing trees and shrubs within the project limits to construct a new stormwater management pond for the West Calgary Ring Road (WCRR). The new stormwater pond is immediately southwest of the existing stormwater pond, west of Valley Ridge. The tree and shrub removals are expected to be complete by December 9, 2019.

The trees are being removed now to minimize impacts to existing wetlands and migratory birds. The area was inspected for nesting animals prior to removal and none were found. Alberta Transportation carefully considers the environmental impacts related to tree removal for any provincial project, including the WCRR. Only trees and brush in the areas required to construct the new infrastructure are being removed to support the successful completion of the project.

In 2022, the completed ring road will provide 100 km of free flow traffic around Calgary, improving access to schools, recreation and employment and reducing congestion within the city which is beneficial for goods movement and overall quality of life.

Thank you for your patience during construction.
